Stonehenge Sunset

Two of our former guests are coming back from Australia in 2012 to do one one of our tours. This will be a one day special on the 3rd June 2012. The tour starts around 9 am in Salisbury and gets back here around 10 pm. A long day, but a magical experience!

Alton Barnes white horse
Traveling  towards Avebury we will stop briefly to see the Alton Barnes white horse. One of the 8 white horses cut into the chalk hillsides in Wiltshire this one dates to 1815.

We will take a short walk up the hillside to visit WEST KENNET LONG BARROW. Built around 3500BC it is around 100m long and trapezoid in shape. Its 5 chambers held a minimum of 46 bodies as your guide will explain.

Silbury HillOn approaching Avebury we will pass by SILBURY HILL, the largest man made mound in Europe from the late Neolithicperiod. It stands 31.4 metres high and covers an area of 5 ½ acres. Built around 2400BC its purpose is unknown. Three tunnels dug in the past to investigate it caused the whole mound to become unstable and major restoration works took place in 2007/8.

AveburyEntering the henge of AVEBURY we will stop and take a tour around the largest stone circle in Britain. As well as describing the henge itself we will try some DOWSING to try and find some LEY LINES. There is a good gift shop in the village.

On leaving Avebury we will travel next to WEST KENNET AVENUE. Originally believed to be a series of 100 pairs of standing stones now only 21 pairs have been re-erected, but still give a good idea of how impressive it would have been.

Glastonbury TorWe will head off to Glastonbury and climb up the Tor with its magnificent views over the surrounding landscape. We will also visit the charming Chalice Wells garden - a peaceful haven of tranquility - and then spend time at Glastonbury Abbey and in the town itself.

Finally we will travel over to Stonehenge and have a look at Durrington Walls, Woodhenge, and walk up the Avenue before going inside Stonehenge at 8.45pm and watch the sunset at 9.15pm before returning to Salisbury.

The tour costs £95 per person including entrances to Chalice Well Gardens, Glastonbury Abbey and Stonehenge.

SOLD OUT! If you are interested in this tour in 2013, please let us know.
